I love breakfast meals. I love having eggs, toast and bacon! It looks like your typical continental bacon and eggs breakfast, eh? Look closer. See the bottle of Vegemite? Heehee. It’s a yeast extract you’ll spread on your toast and eat. That’s true blue Aussie, mate!
I had this meal over at Paul’s in Puerto Galera. I was a bit surprised to find something like it there but, what the heck, eh? Our country’s filled with a variety of international dishes so what makes this Aussie breakfast any different? (Even when it is found on a beach.)
Vegemite is not at all attractive to look at nor enticing to eat. The smell won’t help either but if you’re adventurous enough, go ahead and try it! It’s an acquired taste. Overall, it’s salty. It tastes great on toast. Honest!
I learned that people who are used to travelling (like Rico and Aileen) are brave enough to try something as eating Vegemite. Heehee.
Wasn’t so bad, was it?

When you said it was an acquired taste, it made all sense to me.
Rico: But you’ve got to admit that it wasn’t that bad, right? In fact, it was really tasty! Diba?!
Yes, but not in a necessarily good way.
Rico: Oh, dear. That means you didn’t really like it, huh? Oh, well. Sigh.
It was okay. Interesting taste. Hmmm and I’d probably eat it again… in small amounts that is hehehe.
Aileen: Good! Good! I thought I was all alone on this! Sniff.

Vegemite and Marmite are quite different. Vegemite is a “yeast extract” while Marmite is a “beef extract”.
Vegemite is actually a beer byproduct. According to Aussie folklore it was first made as an attempt to make something from what was left in the beer vats (hops, yeast etc)after the beer was strained.
As an Aussie I grew up with Vegemite, and it’s definitely an acquired taste. It’s a bit like anchovy spread or salted herring, in that you either like it or hate it.
