Vegemite is a "yeast extract" while Marmite is a "beef extract". Vegemite is actually a beer byproduct. According to Aussie folklore it was first made as an attempt to make something from what was left in the beer vats (hops, yeast etc)after the beer was strained. As an Aussie I grew up with Vegemite, and it's definitely an acquired taste. It's a bit like anchovy spread or salted herring, in that you either like it or hate it.
