Food Fixations
By The Parodist | April 27, 2007
First, there was that week-long frustration for Burger King’s onion rings. Then last week’s search for Miggy’s Beef Junior Burrito. And now it’s Chowking’s Halo-Halo Special with one scoop of Ube Ice Cream. Arrrggh!
The term, Halo-Halo, when directly translated means “mixed” and with this summer
food-slash-drinkdessert that’s exactly what you’ll get since it is composed of several local delicacies like nata-de-coco, leche flan (caramel flan), ube (made out of a root crop), etc. served with crushed ice and evaporated milk.I recommend that you check the wiki entry on Halo-Halo esp when you’re not from around this part of the globe.

I still want them onion rings. I actually asked Rico to buy me a burrito and bring it when he comes over later. But it’s the halo-halo that’s still elusive to me! Grrr. You know what’s funny? I’ve been to Chowking twice this past week and I even ordered one halo-halo but the sad thing was it was for my mum and I’m on my way out so I couldn’t enjoy it with her. Sniff. And we were rushing the other time. IMHO, the beauty of eating Chowking’s Halo-Halo is if you’re dining in cuz it’s going to be served in a bowl. Like in their TV commercial, you’ll be able to choose which ingredient you’d what to sample first if you prefer it un-mixed. Hehe.
Gawd. I think I’m simply torturing myself by talking about it but I can’t help it. It’s frustrating! I’m even trying to make plans to eat at Chowking before we head off to the airport (we’re going to Cebu and Bohol!
) so that I can have my halo-halo. I’m hoping that it’ll work out, given the tight schedule and all. Aw, man.. when can I have my Chowking Halo-Halo?
/sighs

I remember back in college, it was always a treat at our dorm. Whenever one of us feels sad, or when we want to celebrate, we’d walk down Taft Avenue to Chowking beside CSB and order our Halo Halo — always with ube ice cream! — and bring it back to the dorm. I don’t mind not choosing what to eat first, as long as I get to eat it. We didn’t even care if the weather is cold!

Too bad Chowking in Taft is already closed.
Hmmm…now I want one too. =))

Tina: Hey, there. Chowking’s been around a while, huh? It’s been there since my Uni days, too. Eeep. I guess I passed on my craving on you.
Let me know if you’ll get around to having one. I’ll be sooo jealous, I’m sure.

Back in the pre-Chowking days one would know its summer when people would set-up halo-halo stands. Five pesos ang regular size and 15 pesos you can get the really big glass. I remember going to Pagsanjan for one of the best Halo-halo in the Philippines. For me the best place I ate Halo-halo was on top of a hill in the Visayas.

I miss Miggy’s!!!
My regular order used to be a beef burrito, cheese flautas, and a burrito dog.

Have you tried Digman’s Halu-halo (in Bacoor, Cavite)?

Markku: QC?! Gawd. That’s a bit of a drive but if you say it’s good then I reckon it can be worth the trouble. Libre mo ba? Hehe.

Juned: Yea. Halo-Halo is a merienda that somehow marks the Summer season. Probably explains why I’m only craving for it now and not a few months ago. LOL. I guess this fixation is partly psychological. What do you think?
Luis: Gawd! You can eat THAT much?! Why aren’t you getting the big tummy that *toot* has somehow amassed?
AnP: LOL. Yea, Rico keeps pressuring me to eat more but I keep telling him that I do want to eat more!
Connie: No, I haven’t! I’m a bit embarrassed to say but I hardly spend time in the Cavite area. Bacoor is the closest one to Las Piñas, right? Where exactly is Digman’s? Perhaps I can try to look for it if I happen to be in the area. Hehe.

I haven’t tried it myself. LOL. Husband and I went looking for the place last summer and failed miserably (and wasted gas!). But we now have clear directions on how we could go there, so it’s definitely Digman’s this summer or bust!! I’ll sweat the details next time.
Yes, Bacoor is very near Las Piñas.

Connie: Looking forward to hearing all about it!
(That way, I can use your recommendation to push the boyfriend to drive all the way out there. Hehe.
