Consider the People behind the Stories

In every story, we should not forget that there are people behind each and every one of them. They may be delivered in a comical and entertaining way but the manner cannot diminish the fact that stories involve people. And these people have feelings.

You might ask me, “What of the story about the tortoise and the hare? Aren’t they animals?” I’d only tell you that I hope your parents, who slaved over putting you through school, worse, taught you common sense, themselves, would not hear you ask those questions. Heh. Pick up a grammar book, or a dictionary may suffice, and look up ‘personification’. Pffft. ;)

Making matters worse is when these people behind the stories are your friends. Friends who’ve supported your ideas, who’d be there to help you, who’d defend your honour — the very same people whose stories you may have callously handled. If you think that you don’t carry a certain responsibility in the matter, or perhaps you refuse to acknowledge the responsibility, then what does that tell us of your principles, nay, morals — and what of your integrity in friendships?

It does makes you wonder, eh?

I believe that there are moments wherein fate would ask you to step up and ‘love your neighbour’ but, I guess, some will prove to be a disappointment. I reckon it’s so easy to pass judgment and sit on the pedestal. Which also brings me to think that some people believe that it’s easy to get away with lies and deception.

I hope they still feel the same way when the day of reckoning knocks at their door. Each person will be held accountable. I sure hope that the pedestal is worth it. ;)

Stories shared between friends are not meant to be sensationalised. There is such a thing as discretion. The reality of their experiences shouldn’t be belittled or cast aside. It’s not to be used for personal vendetta or even to launch a black propaganda.

Instead, your friends would rather have you listen and tread humanely. Catch a teardrop. Photograph that smile. I don’t know… enjoy the friendship you guys have. Empathy is good and, sometimes, sympathy works better but never apathy.

I may seem like a rambling fool but I’d rather be a fool with friends than without. ;)

Here’s a good quote to add to this post:

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

Good thing you put up the disclaimer, or otherwise, some of your readers might wonder if you’re talking about them.

Eugene:  Exactly. That’s why I want to make it clear that I’m addressing everyone because I believe that — at one time or another — we all are guilty of such behaviour. :)

Sometimes I wish I was omniscient, so that I’d know the truth and nothing but the truth.

Even if sometimes I can’t handle the truth, at least that’s better than remaining in the dark about something.

Then again, I wish everyone’s omniscient, so that we can say goodbye to misunderstandings. :)

  4. The Parodist

Rico: We can only hope that people won’t try to twist words just to prove a point. Proper communication can always smooth things out. Sometimes, people can act so righteous that their narrow-minded-ness have cut all possible opportunities for them to see the situation from the other person’s POV.
