Perks of Mobile Pre-paid

By The Parodist | June 6, 2007

The RAZR that blogging boughtYes, I’m one of them mobile users who is still on pre-paid. Heh. However, I haven’t changed my mobile number since I got it — which was back in 2000, together with a second-hand Nokia 3210. What have you got to say to that? Hehe.

Apart from a 7 year-old number (which is now housed in a Motorola RAZR btw), I know there’s nothing really special about it. I guess I’m what you can call ‘careful’ since I try my best not to lose the phone I currently own. Besides, I know there are a lot more (valuable) freebies you get if you’re on post-paid.

BUT get this. What do you think about getting free load or even SMS (text for some people) credits?

I actually started receiving free load since December of last year. I was totally surprised when I got an SMS alert from Globe informing me that I just got Php xx amount of free load. If I remember it correctly, I got them alerts twice. I reckon twas for some loyalty programme of some sort. (Darn right! I’ve been with them for the past seven years! LOL) The last time I received free load was last week — Php 250.00 with 30 free text messages! (I can’t believe it myself!) :-o.

Aryty LogoAnd a few days after, I got an invite to attend a launch event of Aryty (powered by Gorilla Mobile), an online service that allows US and Canada based individuals to send pre-paid credit to Globe, Smart and Sun subscribers here in the Philippines. (What were the chances, huh?! LOL)

I’d say it’s a pretty nifty idea. Friends and family abroad can easily let you know that it’s important for you to remain in contact with them by sending you a Php 150.00 load (for Globe) that would only cost them US$ 3.12. But wait! There’s more! if you’re the type who can simply ask your US (or Canada)-based friend or family member for some credits then there’s even an Ask 4 Load option.

CEO Nils Johnson and Creative Director Daniel Neumann, with the help of Karla Maquiling of PinoyCentric, organised a buffet lunch in the Circles Event Café at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel last Saturday, 02 June 2007.

Oh, yea. Thanks to Aryty, I did get a free Php 150.00 load yet again! Like I said, the perks of being on mobile pre-paid. Hehe. ;)

I still have the same Globe number that I got since 2000 as well. But it’s post-paid. Hehehe. :)

That’s one thing I miss about the Philippines. I prefer to have prepaid than having a monthly plan. But here in the US, it’s more practical to have a plan than use prepaid. What I also like in the Philippines is that you can buy your own cellphone and sim card, and you’re good to go! :D

Jaypee: Funny you mention that cuz I recently experienced “window shopping” with my brother online. He’s currently looking for a reasonably priced phone wherein he can use his T-Mobile sim card. The varying prices on the same phone are crazy! Gah. We had a hard time doing the research, which would have been a walk in the park here in Manila! LOL.

Free load is L-O-V-E! I’ve been on postpaid line for 5 years now, and I still don’t see any outstanding perks aside from the fact that I can make calls anytime (as long as I pay my bills religiously) and with slightly cheaper rates. Well, the postpaid line also came in handy back when I was a heavy mobile phone user. But ever since I gave up corporate work and resorted to domesticity, I am no longer able to consume my basic plan. The boo boo side is, I still have to pay for the entire enchilada and I can’t downgrade to a cheaper monthly plan! Sure, I can get a new phone unit every 2 years, but I’d rather save on the bills than have a new toy. I’m not that crazy over cell phones anyway. ;-)
I might be switching back to prepaid come July/August. My husband is still on postpaid line though because he needs it for work.

i used to be on prepaid, then postpaid, then I’ve recently been on prepaid again for the past few months.

    and i love it!!

i used to spend around 1.5-2k for my postpaid bill. i actually now exist on a p600 smart prepaid, and a p150 sun prepaid.. CHEAP :)

Connie: That’s a bit sad. But that’s one of the reasons I’m considering should I switch to post-paid since somehow it’s a hassle if you’re pressured with the idea that you might run out of credits while on an important call. :( But yea, for the sake of being frugal, it’s wiser to go for the best way to keep the expenses down eh? Hope it works out for you! :)
Pepper: That IS a huge difference! The money you get to save can be used for other things like books, gimmick money or, in my case, shoes!
