Celebrating A Birthday

One of the weird things about me is that I put stock on how I celebrate my birthday. I always want to do something different. I’d buy myself prezzies, often indulging on expensive things. I’d go to some place new. I’d try something new. And, yes, I spend ample time with myself on this day, know what I mean?

This year, I wasn’t really planning on doing anything — grand or not — on my birthday. I actually decided on a whim. Last minute. I had packed my lappytop, my 400D, journal, a book, notebook, pen and an artsy, homemade journal I received from my sister. Then joined by the new iPod Nano that Rico gave me a few minutes before I headed out to a 24-hour Starbucks in Alabang, where I decided I’m going to camp out during the first few hours of my birthday. The place was, surprisingly, relatively empty.

I did bump into a few of my friends whilst there but, generally, I spent around four hours alone. Free to think, reminisce, plan, and dream. Twas like I was savouring the moment of “aging”, metaphorically-speaking, of course. Twas like I had enclosed myself in a bubble. It was a bit lonely and yet twas fulfilling, too. Not at all uncomfortable. I guess I’ve grown used to all the noise and the busy-ness of life and had welcomed this opportunity at a quiet, docile and private time.

As the fading dawn signals the end of the retreat, I was sort of sad to leave it behind but, yea, the rest of the day awaits. The sun had pierced the bubble.

I wonder how each of you celebrate your birthday. As for me, I look forward to the next one. Hoping for a new and refreshing experience as this one.
