U.S.T. Revisited

UST: Logo Plant BoxAn errand had brought my feet to walk the grounds of my Alma Mater, The Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, once again.

U.S.T. is the Catholic University of the Philippines founded back in 1611. Held the title for being the oldest University in Asia for a while. And for us, Thomasians, we fondly call our University, Ustê.

But enough on the trivia.

What I thought to be a pick-up and go kinda’ errand, turned into a mini-walking tour to check out the numerous facelifts done on campus grounds.

UST: Huge-ass UST

Last time I had visited the Uni was back in 2006 and the changes that I’ve recently witnessed had taken me aback. As a graduate of Year 1999, what it looks like at present is definitely unnerving.

Definitely, those UST letters found in front of the main building weren’t there before.

UST: Main

Yes, what used to be faculty and administration officers parking in front of the main building has been turned into a cobbled quad of sorts.

UST: Colayco Park 2

Even the Colayco Park or Bamboo, for some, had suffered the same fate. Gone are the bamboos, fish pond, gazebo, wooden deck and benches, plus the stone benches that lined the shaded and somewhat secluded walkway.

UST: Colayco Park 1

Colayco Park sits between the Main Building, rear entrance to Civil Law, and the infamous University Central Library. Bare, bare, BARE.

UST: Colayco Park 3

Thomasians can now only enjoy the park on the sidelines. Er, unless you prefer sitting on the pavement under the sun. I appreciate that they kept some of the trees, though! A bit of green surroundings can do the students good.

UST: Student Activity Center

Then again there’s the UST-Tan Yan Kim Student Activity Center now. It’s situated right in front of the Central Library. It used to be a park that has that stone statues of saints standing in a circle.

UST: New Multi-level Parking

Another relatively new structure is the multi-level parking with restos and such. I remember them building a multi-level steel parking but I didn’t expect it to look as modern as this. Gah. Something to match the architecture of Fra Angelico and the Student Center perhaps?

Good thing the Field and the Grandstand still looks the same.

UST: Field & Grandstand

Also, that the UST Hospital now is properly “labelled” to avoid confusion. LOL.

UST: UST Hospital

And now, for you Commerce studes who have laboured four (4) years of sitting on old armchairs with no A/C and jurassic tech —

UST: Commerce Building

Students are now saved from blistering heat from El Nino with them fully-A/C’d rooms PLUS they have this sensor at the entrance and chips on their IDs. Too bad for them, though. I used to get in with just a smile and a wink. Kidding. LOL.

(Yes, I had worn an all-white uniform!)

UST: Pavilion

I’m glad that the Pav (Pavilion) still looks the same. Ah, memories.

But the experience, both good and bad, had left me nostalgic. Remembering friendships, academic achievements, and love (I wonder where and how he is now, heehee).

What about you guys? When was the last time you’ve visited your Alma Mater? I’d also love to know where you guys went to Uni! Have you seen changes, drastic or otherwise? Let’s all take a trip down memory lane!

P.S. All you Thomasians, holler back!

mwihihihi, the last time I visited DLSU was when I graduated and returned my toga. That was Summer of 1999!

That far back?! Dear me. No reason to visit? ;) Thanks po. Most of them are done Lomo-style. I was in a hurry!

when was the last time i was in UST nga ba? hmm…i can’t remember but it was definitely this year. (err, my memory is dying).

I saw all the new structures already. First time I saw the changes in the campus I felt a bit sad esp. because our class had lots of memories in Colayco Park and sa coop..hehe :D

But, change is good. I’m just biased to love more the more simple UST campus i had known before :)

  5. The Parodist

Coop! All the fishballs and quek-quek you can eat!

While it’s true that change is good to keep up with the times but history is something that they should try to protect. UST is also known for its gorgeous architecture! No other Uni can compare to the beauty of the Main Building! Not to mention the Arch! :D

I went to UP Diliman last Feb 2008. I saw a lot of changes, too, but basically the campus is still is pristine as ever. :)

This post inspires me to go back and take photos of the new things there. Thanks, Sasha! :)

Meikah: I can’t imagine UP ever changing. I hope they won’t do drastic changes like put up a structure with modern architecture!

  9. Feiyie

Wow, nice post and great pics! I now missed USTe more, but it’s not my Alma Mater. I wish I can finish college there though. lol

  10. Shai Coggins

Nooo…. Whatever happened to all the greenery? The nice landscaped areas? That big UST sign looks horrendous. :-(

I still love UST, though. So many memories. :-)

Feiyie: Thanks and I hope you get to call UST your own, too. :)

Sis: I know right! I was screaming those words in my head esp when I saw the UST sign. Tackiness at its finest. Totally out of place esp when it has the Main Building as its backdrop. Gah. But, yes. UST, I find, is a place that triggers memories of discovery, growth, and freedom (but not too much). ;)

Thanks for the update on UST, Sasha. Wonderful post. UST’s transformation is amazing! I did architecture in UST and sadly I haven’t been able to do a proper visit since graduating in ummm…’91! I like that they made full use of some of the under-utilised areas and turned them into pedestrian-civic spaces. I agree that the UST sign though is reeking of sheer tackiness. They could have chosen better graphics. Nevertheless, I’m still in awe of the Main Building. I remember doing a lot of sketches of its architectural details (part of some visual course requirements..hehehe). I’m sure you have vivid memories of those people from CAFA (then) with the brown uniform. :)

  13. The Parodist

No worries! I’m glad you appreciated it.

CAFA! Yes, I remember the brown-clad ladies lugging around sketchbooks and stuff. Sometimes, I’d often find myself envious that they get to sit around and stare at UST’s gorgeous architecture; without fully realising the pressure in finishing an assignment and such which they must’ve been in.

It’s quite cool to find out that you’re also from UST! :D

  14. ajay

Sa Commerce ka pala, Artlet ako, hehehe. We were in the same building, though definitely not in the same batch :D

Hello there! I went to UST also! I’m glad I dropped by your site! Thanks for the pictures. They really brought back memories… I remember back in 96, my first year there was the first year they put in AC in the Archi Building! =)

Your E71 takes really nice pictures, but I’m sure its the photographer and not the camera!

hi fellow thomasian! we both studied in the same building, me being an artlet. yeah, visited ust last october. i think all these preps are for the 2011 celebration.

as for me, it’s okay if i only got to experience the a/c during my last years in ust. at least i got to experience paying 4-digit tuition fees per sem… unlike the students now. :D

Im from USTe too, nice post. I always go to UST, its literally stone throw away from my home and we go there to hear mass, I watched it transform in front of my eyes, studied there for 9 years, 4 years in high school and 5 years in Arki. Yes I am one of those in brown sitting around and sketching, but you cant say that “assignments” are a lot harder than our sketches.. We doo sketch, and draw about architectures but we do have tons of math and history too.

  21. JaNii D.

hello, i’m janii from the faculty of eng’g.
and i was just a newcomer.
as a newcomer, i saw and experienced those changes (i saw how UST was in the 1990s).

yeah, the main bldg already had the UST letters on it. Also, ITHM, Educ, and Eng’g had their own inside each buildings too. Also, CFAD and Arki have gone to their new Beato Building.

And the well-known Lover’s Lane? It’s already renovated. Gone were the benches and some of the trees that used to hide the PDA-ers. :) )

Thanks for adding bits of trivia to the post. Always appreciate a fresh perspective, an insider to boot. Hi, JaNii :)

  23. nodnyl1966

Nice blog! Its a trip down memory lane. I am from CAFA ’91. Miss those times and the friends I had back then. Lovers lane, Main bldg. sketches, sitting on the bench, looking at cute girls going to the Arts bldg., really its good to remember it all.
    .-= nodnyl1966´s last blog .. =-.

Thanks! Good memories are precious. Keep remembering them!
