There’s something about traveling that opens one’s soul; taking in wisdom from nature, the firmness of the ground you walk on and the vastness of the sky above. You marvel at the beauty around you; from the variety of textures, colours and shapes to the combination of matter and the rest of the elements. You feel a certain connection with everything else. A solitude that breaks the silent turmoils. Suddenly the universe and the future aren’t as chaotic as you initially thought. There’s sense. There’s peace.

If there’s one place I’d recommend you folks see at least once before you die, Mt Pinatubo is one of the better choices. Just 3 hours away from Manila to the take-off point, another couple of hours (give or take) of rough, mountainous terrain then an approximately 45-minute uphill trek (depends on your pace, of course) and finally, upon reaching the ridge, your eyes will feast on this majestic view —

You will forget that you’re soaking wet in your own sweat and that your muscles are sore cuz you simply can’t shake off the feeling that you’ve stumbled upon a gem in a country you thought you already knew. Personally, it took my breath away. I knew I was in the presence of a masterpiece of some sort. It’s like seeing the Chocolate Hills in Bohol for the first time multiplied 10 times over. It was truly a humbling experience.

The trip reminded me of the reasons why I love traveling. Partly the same reasons that caused me to start blogging and taking photos.

I’m leaving you folks with the product of my very first try in filming and editing. Equipment used was a Flip Ultra courtesy of DOVE Philippines (chose me as one of their Ambassadors, god knows why) and one of the iLife apps in MrBoo, iMovie.

Hi to all my co-trekkers: Penny, Jeff, Madel, Jen, Yoshi, Angel and Arnold, The UBER Trekker (just because he had a gazillion of gadgets and trinkets esp made/used for, er, hiking..? Whatever.) LOL.

Any of you folks been to Mt Pinatubo? Any plans of going? Perhaps you know of an awesome eco-tourism destination that you’d like to share? Please do! I’d love to explore options, esp now that I’ve tested the waters (sort of) and found I can take it. Hahaha. Don’t you love traveling?

Sharing video clips I made for the DOVE 7-Day No Mirror Challenge:

I don’t normally clutter my personal blog with announcements like these but I reckon it’d be a nice filler while I cook up other things to share with you folks as I shift back to regular programming. Online contests are one of the better ways to create a splash on the web and letting people know that there’s this opportunity to own one heck of a gadget is worth this bit of effort.

First announced over at Style Manila and also shared over at Style Cebu, this raffle that’s sponsored by Lewis & Pearl is getting a considerable amount of mileage online (at a cost, mind you). It’s one of the many online marketing strats that most companies are trying their hand in.

The Apple iPad will definitely turn heads. I know for a fact that there are a number of Win an iPad contests which clutter the internet. I’ve even encountered a few contests hosted on Facebook pages, not to mention, this online gamer community site that’s giving away an iPad as well.

This sort of campaign has now become too common though it doesn’t take away the fact that a lot of folks still want to own one and it doesn’t hurt that they can actually get it for free. Free is always good.

Read on to get a better idea of what’s in store.

Warning: Press release ahead.

Lewis & Pearl Says: The Real You Rocks!

It’s not easy growing up. Things seem to transform overnight—priorities change, toys get old and boys get interesting, new responsibilities appear and clothes all of a sudden don’t fit right. Add to that the world’s expectations about how a girl is supposed to look, act and be, and you end up with a time of your life that seems less fun than it is frustrating.
Perfect is Boring!

One thing that all teenage girls should keep in mind though, is that nobody’s perfect–not the highest-paid movie star or the most in-demand supermodel. Everybody has their own little quirks – habits or traits that are unique to you. Teen star Miley Cyrus loves ketchup so much, she drinks it straight from the bottle! Even supermodel Tyra Banks has said that she was a “sick-looking beanpole” growing up. In fact, it’s a person’s quirks that make her interesting. It gives her something to laugh about with friends, endears her to the people who know her well, and makes her special.

Lewis & Pearl believes that girls should be proud of their quirks, and have the confidence to let the world know all about her fabulously imperfect self!

The cologne brand’s newest campaign, called “The Real You Rocks!” highlights this message. The television ad, featuring an exciting young cast, celebrates the lead character Angel’s quirks. An innovative online campaign on www.lewisandpearl.com, Facebook and Friendster allows girls to shout out their quirks and have other users vote on them. There are also on-ground activities that encourage “barkadas” to proudly share their quirks with their friends. At stake for girls who tell others why they rock are Apple iPads and barkada mobile phones if their quirks are chosen by the community and by Lewis & Pearl.

With over a dozen different scents, Lewis & Pearl has a fragrance that will suit any girl’s quirky side. And with the easy freshness that its Colognes and Body Mists bring, any girl can find the confidence to be refreshingly real.

Celebrity Quirks: Nobody’s Perfect!
Most people don’t know that Hillary Duff collects cookbooks, but has never used a recipe from any of them. And even the most hard-core of Twilight fans are probably unaware that hunky Robert Pattinson whistles while he walks—they just think he’s pouting!
The biggest stars have their quirks, but we still love them. The truth is that everyone does. Quirks—those little traits that only YOU have—are what make everybody who they are!

Lewis & Pearl, the leading cologne brand for teens, has gathered a list of stars and their quirks. Read on to learn what they are!
Teen superstar Miley Cyrus loves Heinz ketchup so much she drinks it straight from the bottle! On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Miley said “there’s nothing odd” about her unusual taste. “If it tastes good, what does it matter?” she said, adding, “It’s half the calories.”
There are a lot of Paparazzi photos of Robert Pattinson with his lips in a sexy pout. And that’s because he whistles while he walks! Many Twilight fans who’ve actually seen him do it thinks it’s very endearing.

“I hop like a bunny when I’m happy. I get a bit childlike,” said pop singer Katy Perry in the February issue of Glamour magazine.
Former The O.C. actress Rachel Bilson admitted to Cleo magazine that she has “lots of weird habits,” and the one she’s most embarrassed about is dancing by herself. Her fave music to dance to? Britney Spears!

Every time local TV host Bianca Gonzalez travels to a different city, she makes sure she takes home a personalized keepsake. “I collect cartwheel shots!” she told Candy magazine.

Nicole Kidman likes doing household chores! The Oscar winner revealed to People mag that she “loves putting clothes in the washing machine. I would always do the washing growing up—that was one of my jobs,” and added, “I quite like ironing shirts.”
Supermodels have perfect bodies, right? Well, Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova has literally no belly button. Her reps said her beauty quirk happened when she had an umbilical hernia during her childhood and her parents had it operated.

Filipina actress Iza Calzado is a cake monster! “I like to eat cake straight from the box without slicing it,” she told Inquirer’s Dolly Carvajal.
Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers has an interesting favorite snack. “I’ve really gotten into celery with peanut butter. It’s one of the best things and it’s really healthy,” he told Candy.

Almost everybody wishes they had slim ankles. But not Jennifer Lopez. “People say they like thin ankles, but for me it’s always been a weird thing,” she told Candy about her body part that she’d like to change.

Superstar or not, your very own quirks are what make you extra special. Have the confidence to shout them out to the world with the freshness of Lewis and Pearl Cologne. Remember, the real you rocks!

Show how YOU rock by shouting out your quirks; and get a chance to win an Apple iPad.

Too much information. That’s an understatement, really. Lewis & Pearl should’ve taken the brief and concise route in pushing this sort of content. Bullet points and ordered lists, drop the primers, anecdotes and bits and pieces of information to support the entire campaign. Nothing beats an easy read. Majority of the web surfers tend to skim rather than to attentively and thoroughly read the entire thing. My two cents.

If you get the chance in leaving your thoughts on the points I raised regarding the campaign, please do and know that it’ll be greatly appreciated. I’m rather interested to know more about how this sort of content is being received. Is it really something you’d really read? Is this format effective in your book? Suggestions on how to improve it maybe?

Anyway, enough about my somewhat unrelated nitpicking. I’ll simply wish you good luck. I sincerely hope you enjoy yourselves as you participate.

December is the month filled with celebrations. Of course, the most obvious reason would be Christmas but the month is filled with friends’ birthdays, “Simbang Gabi”, and such, too.

The month is also known for the unbelievably, horrendously, you’d-rather-shoot-yourself-than-drive-in-that-traffic heavy traffic. But this doesn’t really stop people from going out anyway. There are still things to do, events to attend, and so on and so forth.

With all the busy-ness — sometimes, people forget that it’s my birthday, too. Sniff. Not entirely their fault, I know. Because to be honest, even if I do want to throw a party or something, people will be just too busy or worse stuck in traffic to go since my birthday is much too close to Christmas.

Another sad thing about that bit (having a birthday too close to Christmas, that is) people tend to be stingy. LOL. Instead of giving two separate gifts, I would end up getting only one gift hearing them use the too close to Christmas with matching whinging about how hard the times are sort of excuse. Yes, I’ve grown accustomed to it.

Oh, don’t get me wrong! I’m not here to complain. Just stating plain facts. I’m actually grinning while I’m writing this post! I guess I better get to the point.

Perhaps the folks from Clinique is wise to have sent their gifts early. Not only did they catch me before I leave the country, but also saves them the headache of competing with all the rush and traffic that comes with the holiday season.

The gift bag actually contains products for review but the cupcakes are a bonus! I know work’s involved but I love Clinique and reviewing these babies won’t feel like work at all!

Thanks, May! It’s never too early to have a Happy Holiday and Birthday!

Having been consumed by work and getting lost in the urban jungle of everyday life, taking time out to focus on your health and general well-being are such rare occurences for some people nowadays. Oftentimes, one can’t help but wonder if individuals even stop and ask themselves, “am I healthy?”

Driving down south, towards the direction of Tagaytay, spending an hour and a half on the road is well worth the time and effort esp if it means I’ll be spending a day celebrating wellness at Nurture Spa Villages.

Proudly Filipino, Nurture Spa is one of the pioneers in the spa industry in the country. They offer exquisite spa and wellness experiences. International standard services include massages, facials, scrubs, body wraps, hair treatments, spa packages, outdoor treatments, and in-room treatments that are inspired by Asian and Filipino healing traditions. They also offer overnight accommodations. Nurture Spa was created to provide its guests a blissful combination of healing and pampering at its best.

Three things on top of my list were de-stress, research, and photography.

De-stressing

The past few weeks have been pretty toxic on my end. Schedule’s crammed with things to do both online and off, plus basically tying up loose ends just in case my holiday travel plans does push through. Let’s just say I’m in dire need of a massage and when this opportunity presented itself, I didn’t loose any time in setting up an appointment.

Stepping out of the car that Friday morning, I had immediately felt a huge difference in my surroundings, which lifted my spirits. I reckon being around nature can do that to you.

Greeted with a smile and a cup of herbal tea allowed us to settle in comfortably, basking in the warmth of the welcome. Letting us know that we were expected and that everything is being prepared esp for us, created an impression of personalised service. Something that I definitely appreciate about the place.

Physiologically, one carries the burden of keeping him or herself fit and well. But we all know that we tend to stretch ourselves too thin and would often forget to take better care of ourselves. This is where a bit of pampering would do us good. This is why having massages or spa treatments are getting more and more popular. People are beginning to see that it’s not a mere luxury but is actually one of the ways to administer health and wellness that we really need.

Research

One of the main reasons for the visit was a review of the place and, of course, their services. Finding myself traipsing around the beautiful grounds of Nurture Spa, it’s almost possible to forget that I’m also there for work. Twas real easy to get lost in the relaxing atmosphere and give in to the feeling of rest. Had I not brought along a camera and a notebook, I would’ve.

Good thing that I had been to Nurture Spa before. The memory served as material which helped in the comparison to determine progress and such. This gave me a bit of freedom to enjoy the latest spa experience, sharing it with someone, and to discover new things about the place.

Photography

I always love photo-documenting my travels and somewhat unique experiences. I enjoy telling stories with the use of photographs. And the place didn’t fail me in that respect.

You can’t help but admire the promise of health and wellness that the place brings. Looking at all the photos I took, I’m still reminded of the experience. Perhaps it’s because I had enjoyed the spa treatment and the surroundings myself, hence, the memory still being fresh and vivid. But I reckon knowing that there’s a peaceful place up in Tagaytay where people can go to rest, relax, and recharge helps in keeping the feeling of lightness while looking at the photos.

It’s actually great to note that over the years, Nurture Spa has also gained the reputation as one of the prime choice for garden weddings, wedding anniversary celebrations, engagement and corporate functions. Can you imagine celebrating such occasions in a relaxing place? I imagine people will be effected with peace and tranquility; lifting their spirits!

This experience has caused me to be more aware of my health. And it strengthened my belief that celebrating wellness is not such an impractical thing to do rather it’s something that each of us should really think about. I can understand the pressures of everyday life that’s why I would strongly advocate the practice of a healthier lifestyle (quite ironic since I’m a smoker, LOL — ah, well, baby steps!). I can really say that an occasional spa treatment (the right sort and not the run-of-the-mill massages) will do wonders.

Thanks Mike and Cathy Turvill for inviting me up to Nurture Spa Tagaytay for a day of health and wellness. Much, much appreciated!

P.S. I’ll be updating this post as soon as I publish the reviews/features on the spa treatment and such. Stay tuned!

Great thing about going out with your best friend is that letting your hair down, figuratively, is no great nor terrifying task. You drop the unnecessary baggage of impressing the other person, or the incessant need to make them like you. The best friend already does — warts and all!

So the things I’d consider trivial like long hours on the road, going to the mall and dining out, and even talking about business stuff have become quite surprisingly more pleasant.

It was M’s idea to try out Pepper Lunch at Power Plant one Friday evening. It was her first time. Even for someone who has a RAV4 at her disposal, she hates driving outside her set perimeter. I guess finding herself spending a lot of time with me lately had caused her to break it more than usual (Ortigas to pick up the NARS Super Orgasm! LOL!)

We decided to splurge on two of the more expensive sets on the menu: the popular Shimofuri Pepper Steak for M..

and I enjoyed the soft and tender Yawaraka Loin Steak.

I have to say mine was a surprisingly great choice. Though both look pretty much the same, I know. It’s just that the Yawaraka Loin meat is indeed much, much tender without losing the quality of taste. Regardless, these two sizzling hot steak plates will still go down the nom nom nom nom books fersher!

The trip to Pepper Lunch was supposedly a group thing but due to uncontrollable circumstances, people failed to make it. But there’s always a next time. Omasake is still on the list!

The night became one of our “dates” instead. LOL. So, a night filled with non-stop conversations while checking out the mall, which we don’t usually go to (we’re both Southerners and hate Makati traffic, pah). And lots and lots of window shopping AND, of course, shopping!

My haul from The Body Shop.

<ins>Update</ins>: Blogged about it here — Latest Haul from The Body Shop

And a little something from Shu Uemura.

Keeping that one a secret as I have yet to blog about these beauty loots at Beauty Bento Box. I guess you need to stay tuned for that (if you’re really interested in that sort of thing, that is).

Update: My Own Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil. Finally.

Capped the night with hot choco and venti soy latte for M and I, respectively, at Starbucks. We then decided to get down to business. But even then, things were still pleasurable. Perhaps having been friends for over a couple of decades has its exclusive perks.

Hands down, it’s one of the best days in my life so far. I reckon everything takes on a more vibrant shade if you’re with someone you know who’d appreciate it they way you would just because you’re friends. It reminded me of the many reasons why M and I have one of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

This is my way of saying thanks for a great day, M. I hope I can return the favour many times over.

What about you guys? Have you gone on a “date” with your best friend lately?

A day late but with good reason. How can I possibly let this week pass without a post on the things that I’m thankful for? Esp since this past week, I was reminded of the dreams I had listed down eight (8) years ago. Yes, I have a journal to prove it. LOL.

We all have dreams and wants in life that seemingly fuels our drive to wake up each morning and do the things we ought to do for the day. We may wish for small things and, sometimes, we dare to dream big. The important thing is to never stop dreaming and, of course, chasing after those dreams.

I’ve always been the type who’d set goals and establish a list of wishes that leads to the achievement of the goal. It often feels like I would always prefer to go for the bigger fish but would still find joy in a school of little fishes that can somewhat be likened to getting the big fish, know what I mean?

Anyway, here are seven (7) of my dreams that had been fulfilled, not last week, but during the course of my lifetime. Comes with the memory is a reminder of what I am thankful for this week:

1. Live independently at 25. Ah, freedom! Even when twas just for only a year. But I lived it! On my own, no allowance. No running off to mummy when you need a decent meal or money when the month’s utility bill comes. Not even going home on weekends. I was definitely living independently. My reasons for moving out was nothing to be proud of, though. But I reckon that’s how I often learn, eagles do push their young off the nest so that they can learn how to use the wings they were born with. I’m now back living with my mum but not because I need to but because we need each other. I’m thankful she allowed me to have the same amount of freedom as when I had lived on my own.

2. Own a car. Technically it wasn’t mine yet. I was still paying it off but it was very much for my own use. I love cars. Owning that car allowed me to learn how to fix certain things, i.e. what to do when the car won’t start, but I have yet to change a flat tire. Anyway, twas a white 95 Corolla GTi, 16″ wheels with chrome rims, turbo-injected and that vroom-vroom muffler. Oh, yea. You’d think it was a guy’s car. LOL. Too bad I had to say goodbye, reason? See #4.

3. Become a model. I know. I know. I wouldn’t even dare say this out loud had it not come true. Whatta embarrassment. LOL. But, to my surprise, it did. Life is filled with one cliché after another and this one is no different (was approached by a scout in a mall! LOL). After a series of ramp gigs during the initial months, got signed by a modeling agency in Makati, approached by a free agent, attended numerous VTRs and cast calls, appeared as an “extra” in some nondescript beer commercial back in 2004 (Nyahahaha!). I’m so glad to see this chapter of my life closed. But I do sometimes miss the photoshoots. Ah, well. See #7. Ha.

4. Travel. Who has no dreams of going abroad? Growing up with parents, my mum in particular, who loved to take their kids around, had let in the travel bug to infect us. I’ve always wanted to travel and see the rest of the world. Initially, I had dreams of conquering Asia first. But I had wanted to be different. While most talk about going to Hong Kong, my first trip outside the country landed me on Singapore (back in 1999 then again in 2001). Then this early year, I had been to Vietnam and Cambodia. Yes, I still haven’t been to Hong Kong. LOL. Then this reminded me of my plans of visiting a “Western” country next. As usual, everyone is talking about going to the US, I had found myself taking a two (2) 3-month sabbaticals in Australia. Yes, two! September to December 2005 then January to April 2006. True to His word, he had given me the opportunity to have a different travel experience. It’s kinda’ awesome when you think about it.

5. Local trips. Where do I even start? One of the things that makes me proud as a Filipino is that we do live in a gorgeous country. From vibrant cityscapes to amazing stretches of untouched shorelines. If you’re able, let it be part of your life’s itinerary to visit the different Philippine locales. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to experience places like: Boracay, Cebu, Bohol, Tagaytay, Punta Fuego, Vigan, Puerto Galera, Zambales, Subic, etc. AND, of course, the place that occupies the top spot in my heart, Palawan.

6. Sustainable lifestyle. From that day I wrote it down on my journal, I’ve been daring myself to try new things. Grabbing opportunities to experience things that I haven’t thought of doing. Now, I’m able to confidently say that I’ve learned what I sort of lifestyle I would love to keep. I take simple joys from quiet walks, coffee breaks, thrifty and splurge shopping sprees, economy flights, modest accommodations, or a luxurious home. Actually, I’m not entirely done yet. I still hunger for a certain balanced lifestyle that suits my personality and needs but I’m taking my time. There’s no rush. I’m simply thankful that I’m fortunate enough to continue seeing and making full use of opportunities that nurture and even stretch it.

7. Find a passion. Getting to enjoy my current work is awesome. It has allowed me to exercise certain things that I didn’t imagine I’d be passionate about, writing and photography. I’m able to enjoy fashion, styling and beauty almost everyday. It paved a way for more opportunities to come into my life. Oh, I’m so excited about the new ones that seem to be drawing my online work offline! I can’t wait to tell you guys about it. Soon!

Thinking of these things made me realise how one can be undeservingly fortunate. I’m overwhelmed by the wonderful things that had happened in my life. It’s such a delight to be reminded of the fact that dreams do come true. They may not come in the exact form as you may have imagined it, the important thing is that they came and they were all for you.

So, what about you guys? Have any of your dreams come true? What dreams are you thankful for this week?

My week started out with news on the article on Fashion blogs getting published on Manila Bulletin. It was a Sunday. We all know how Sunday issues are hard to find late into the day. Yes. I only read the sms late Sunday afternoon, hence, my missing to get a hard copy.

Yonina Chan got in touch with me, requesting an interview cuz she was doing a piece on local fashion blogs. I agreed, so we met and got it over with. She’s a doll. Very down-to-earth.

Here’s a link to an online copy of the article:

Shout outs to style
by Yonina Chan, Manila Bulletin, 06 April 2008

After that, my week was filled with stuff to do. Like gym (aherm, aherm!), work, and events. I was at the NOKIA Soul of the Night event at the Embassy Superclub and the DELL Philippines launch at Prince of Jaipur.

THEN there’s this newspaper feature on my personal style, well, at least the outfit I wore to the Sunsilk Life Can’t Wait Event. I couldn’t really process the news properly cuz I was close to falling asleep when I got an sms from Alexei. I simply dispatched my yaya to go grab me a copy. Heh.

It’s on JR Isaac’s column in The Philippine Star, “Hue still got it”, 11 April 2008.

You can check it out here:

‘Hue still got it’, Ystyle, Philippine Star
StyleManila.com

It’s been a crazy week for me. I’m so glad I’m heading to the beach in a few hours to get some r&r (Zoobik tayo, phare!). What about you guys? How was your week? DO update me. I’d love to hear from you. Anyway, I’ll see you when I get back!

I reckon I ought to start from the beginning, huh?

Well, it was Saturday, 14 July 2007. Twas the longest day ever.

8 am Weirdest of days. I’m used to sleeping in and waking up in the afternoon or, sometimes, I’m only awake at night (seemingly keeping vampire hours). But, lo and behold, I’m awake and was on the phone when the GMail notifier pinged me that I have new mail, from a certain Niña of ABS-CBN’s morning show, Umagang Kay Ganda.

10 am I received an inquiry on my email from ABS-CBN, one of the major TV stations here in the Philippines. Duh.

11am – 1pm I rounded up possible contacts for clothes pull-out and boutique availability for a location shoot. Plus I had to find a model to style.

1pm – 3pm I took care of putting together the things I needed to bring like extra clothes and accessories. Of course, I had to look presentable myself, if you know what I mean.

3pm – 5pm Model and friend, Eena Acuña, came over my place so I can do her makeup before the TV crew picks us up. I loved the experience. I realised just how much I missed being a makeup artist. It’s been a while.

6pm – 11pm Shoot, styling, profiling and interview. Gawd. I was just about ready to put away my Black Quilted Patent Peep-toe Stilts and call it a night but we had to give Eena a ride back to Makati and yea, a wine party to attend.

Then come Tuesday, 17 July 2007, the segment aired. I know. I know. I didn’t really blog about it here in my personal blog, but if you’ve been following my fashion blogs, Style Manila and Tops 2 Bottoms, you would’ve caught wind of it and were able to watch the show. Freudian slip maybe? Hehe.

Later that same day, I attended a press event, the launch of Unilever’s revolutionary new anti-dandruff shampoo, Clear, held at the Renaissance Hotel in Makati. Where I thoroughly enjoyed playing fashion photographer during “The Black Fashion Show”, which featured designs/styling from Kate Torralba, Puey Quiñones, Viktor and Folded & Hung. I came as a blogger, part of New Media, covering the event. But, of course, since I’m a fashion and a beauty blogger, they made it easier cuz I can focus on the fashion show and the shampoo as a beauty product. It’s absolutely within my niche, baby! LOL.

You can view the photos (via lightbox) of the fashion show over at Style Manila.

And over the past couple of days, I’ve been doing a bit of shopping. Post fodders, you see. (yea, right.. LOL.) Though, there was a time when I went shopping simply for therapy for reasons I’d rather not blog about. Heh. The mere memory of these two events still make my blood boil. So, I’m dropping the subject now. Hehe.

Anyway, it certainly has been an interesting week for me. ‘Twas filled with activities that are related to what I’m passionate about. Few of the things that make up the reasons why I’m grateful that I’m in this industry. Thankful for opportunities that enable me to do what I love to do.

What about you? How was your week? Were you able to do something that you’re passionate about? How was it?
