New Books: Jane Austen and Dante Alighieri

By The Parodist | January 17, 2008

Emma, Persuasion by Jane Austen, The Inferno by Dante Alighieri

I’m hoping to get more time to read this year. It’s shameful how I’ve managed to stock up on books that I still have to read, some I’ve even started reading but have yet to finish. Dear me. There are just too many things I want to do but there’s too little time. But, no. I’m going to reach my goal of 500 books. I reckon it doesn’t matter if the pile of books I have to read is getting higher, I know I’ll get around to reading them one way or another. I just need to push myself more.

Funny cuz it’s not that I haven’t been reading. I have been. Er, I mean, I am. I’m actually reading Pride & Prejudice for the nth time. I reckon that’s why I ended up buying two Jane Austen novels in my last trip to the bookshop. I picked up Emma and Persuasion. Ah, yes. I do plan to complete all Austen’s novels. Hehe.

The Inferno by Dante Alighieri is part of a trilogy, I hear. Rico recommended the book, his interest peaked mine, hence, the purchase. I guess you guys can expect me to buy the other two soon after I’m finished with this one.

Sasha - Fornarina SpecsWith all these planned readings, I can’t help but think that my new specs will really be put into use then, yeah? LOL.

Incidentally, the bookshop where I bought these books from is called Bestsellers. I found out that it’s owned by National Bookstore. I guess they’re trying to streamline and enter the “bookshop” brand to compete against Powerbooks and Fully Booked, eh?

Anyway, what about you guys? What’s new on your reading list this year? Do share and feel free to recommend books! I’d love to explore and expand. Hehe.

Stylish specs! Bagay! *wink* Oh, I love Inferno. :) ( and other dark stuff ). I’ve only read Pride and Prejudice and haven’t read any Jane Austen novels, but I do hope I would have the chance. Right now, I’m waiting for books 2 and 3 of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman, and erm, a stock market book? teehee :)) Seeking to read Paradise Lost, too :)

    Nice glasses! I want to get new glasses too since mine seems to be ready to break off anytime. –;

I have this goal to read 50 books this year, and I just finished my first one — The Cubicle Next Door by Siri L. Mitchell. It’s Christian chicklit, and it’s such a fun read because the protagonist is a blogger too. :D Right now I’m reading The Princess Bride by William Goldman, which I have been trying to read since last year. It’s been a fun read so far. I’ve got about 15 more books in my reading list, heh.

Oh, as for recommendations, try picking up The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde. One of my personal favorites which I recommend to all bookworms I meet. :)

I’ve been wanting to read Jane Austen’s books since forever but never got around to doing it. Sheesh. But I definitely will — at least in this lifetime, LOL.

I’m still on Jeffrey Eugenides’ 2nd book called “Middlesex” (no it’s not something sexual, haha). It’s taking me a while to finish, but it’s not because the book’s boring. I just lack the time. Hehe.

    Enjoy your handful! :)

Sophie: Thanks! Pride & Prejudice is an all-time favourite (hence my reading it over and over). Do grab another copy of a Jane Austen novel if you can. I’m a bit surprised that you like “dark stuff”; you’re so bright and sunny most of the time! :D
Tina: Thanks po! We do need a new pair every now and then, yeah? I just finished my first book of the year, too. It’s a re-read, though. I hope to read more new books this year! :)
Joni: If there’s a Jane Austen book I’d recommend, it’s Pride & Prejudice. I do hope you get around reading one soon. (Says a Jane Austen fan, LOL) Oh,is Middlesex a place like Sussex (in the book)? :)

500 books to read is definitely a huge and worthwhile undertaking. Off the top of my head, my recommends are:

Non-fiction: Brief History of Everything, Power of Now, I Celebrate Myself, 4 Hour Work Week, Getting Things Done, A History of Knowledge, How to Lose Friends and Infuriate People, and Awakening the Giant.

Fiction and Narrative: Fear of Flying, Belgariad series (best LOTR type of series), The Neverending Story (Hand down best fantasy book I’ve ever read), Angela’s Ashes, and Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - which took me 6 difficult years to read.

By the way, nice meeting you at the Online Marketing event of USAutoParts.

I guess it is. That’s why I’m really pushing myself til my last breath. Hehe.

Awesome recommendations! From your list, I was only able to read Getting Things Done and How to Lose Friends and Influence People — er, waitaminute! Did you say Infuriate?! If yes, then no, I haven’t read that.
I guess, I can understand how some books can take a while to finish cuz I’m stuck on several. But 6 years?! Egad. LOL.

Yea, great to meet you at the event! Hope to bump into you online more often! :)

[...] 3. Reading. I’ve always cherish the moments that I can hold a book in my hands and discover the things that the author has in mind for the book. At present, I was able to devour two (2) books and am now on my third, the first book of the Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, Inferno. [...]
